File D9.1 Requirements Specification by Academic Users on Integrated Adaptive Learning Services (PDF)
This deliverable documents the stakeholder interviews in the academic setting. Adaptive features and dimensions were presented to learners and training providers through usage scenarios in order to elicit from them, which features and dimensions are key to an adaptive learning system.
File D5.1 Integrated model of adaptation on learning with specifications (PDF)
The aim of this document is to define an integrated model for adaptive learning, based on existing specifications. Such a model should help to achieve a common understanding of relevant concepts in personalized adaptive e-learning and to clarify their relationships with current learning technology standards.
File D3.2a Integrated model of adaptation on learning with specifications (PDF)
This research report outlines a preliminary definition and design of a concept relationship type (CRT) tool. Objectives and requirements of a CRT tool for representing relationship types based on the domain model (DM) and for defining adaptation rules towards a conceptual adaptation model (CAM) are investigated. Functionalities and components constituting the building blocks of the CRT tool and their initial design are delineated.
File D4.2a Design of the infrastructure for the adaptive delivery of VR learning material (PDF)
This document is the first deliverable of Work Package 4, task T4.2. It describes the approach that will be used inside GRAPPLE for the adaptive delivery of Virtual Reality learning material. The approach taken is to extend the adaptive learning engine of GRAPPLE with a number of features. One is a set of virtual reality specific adaptation attributes that are needed to be able to realize the adaptations envisaged. The other is a browser plug-in that will act as an interface between the adaptive learning engine of GRAPPLE and a VR player.
File D3.4a Design of an authoring platform for adaptive VR learning material (PDF)
This document is the first deliverable of Work Package 3, task T3.4. It describes the design of the authoring tool for Virtual Reality learning material. This authoring tool will allow authors to specify how Virtual Reality learning material should be adapted to the learner’s profile. This document describes different types of adaptations that can be support for Virtual Reality, as well as a number of adaptation strategies for Virtual Reality material. Based on a number of typical scenarios, the main requirements for the authoring tool are formulated and the design is presented.
File D7.1a Initial specification of the operational infrastructure (PDF)
This document presents the initial specifications of the interfaces to be designed and developed in the GRAPPLE Operational Infrastructure, where all the different components of the system will be integrated (ALE, LMS, authoring tools, user interfaces, etc).
File D3.5a Design of an Adaptive Simulation Authoring Tool (PDF)
This deliverable describes the authoring tool for adaptive simulations. We provide some motivation for adaptive simulations – why adaptive hypermedia based on content alone is not enough. We survey existing tools for authoring simulations and their support (if any) for specifying adaptivity. We specify the requirements for an authoring tool for adaptive simulations and show how the tool-set developed within GRAPPLE for adaptive non-simulated learning environments can be extended to cover adaptive simulations. Finally we present an initial design for such an authoring tool.
File D4.5a Design of interactive visualization of models and students data (PDF)
This document reports the design of the interactive visualizations of open learner models that will be performed in GRAPPLE. The visualizations will be based on data stored in the domain model and user model, and aim at supporting learners to be more engaged in the learning process, and instructors in assisting the learners.
File D4.1a Design of the Infrastructure for the Adaptive Delivery of Simulations (PDF)
This deliverable details the design of an infrastructure for the delivery of adaptive simulations, in particular, procedural simulations through dialogs and the adaptive combination of dialogs. It provides some motivation for adaptive simulations – why adaptive hypermedia based on content alone is not enough. We survey existing engines for delivering adaptive simulations (or some element of them). We specify the requirements for the delivery of adaptive simulations. We also present an initial design for such an infrastructure.
File D7.2a Data models and related documentation (PDF)
This document contains the first version for a set of harmonized data models to be exchanged within the GRAPPLE system. The focus is set on syntactical and semantic aspects of user model exchange. The central (syntactical) RDF application is called “GrappleStatements”. The central (semantic) OWL vocabulary is called “GrappleOntology”. The idea is to represent and externalize the knowledge of the individual systems with modern, reusable Semantic Web technologies
File D3.1a Design specification of a DM definition tool (PDF)
This document describes the research analysis and the design of the Domain Model tool to be implemented in the scope of WP3 - Authoring conceptual adaptation structures within Task 3.1. The focus of this design is to define the user-interface specification for authoring a Domain Model. The corresponding interface will allow authors to create and/or import conceptual structures and link content/resources to concepts from the Domain Model.
File D6.1a Distributed user model platform and retrieval service (PDF)
In this document we present the design of a Distributed User Modeling Architectureon the knowledge representation ideas of the newly defined “GrappleStatements” that realize an extended RDF application. With their meta-attributes, these are especially suited for distributed, decentralized scenarios that are predominant in current life-long learning experiences. The new storage platform is called “GrappleBroker”. It collects and distributes partial user models under the constraints of possible retrieval filters with embedded privacy and access control.
File D1.1a CAM to Adaptation Rule Translator (Specification) (PDF)
This deliverable specifies a translation from a Conceptual Adaptation Model to low-level adaptation rules for the GRAPPLE Adaptive Learning Environment. We do this by specifying a ‘middle language’, which is an abstract and engine independent language named GAL. GAL allows for the specification of an adaptive navigation structure in which the higher level authoring constructs can be translated to and which abstracts from the engine specific rules of the adaptive engines that are in existence.
File D1.2a Resource Selector Specification (PDF)
This deliverable describes the “translation” from concepts to resources in GRAPPLE. Access to information, activities, tasks, etc. is done through concepts. Each concept may be linked with a number of concrete resources (files, pages, queries to repositories or anything else that can be addressed through a URI). Based on user model properties a runtime selection of a resource or query is made.
File D1.3a “Stand-alone” Adaptive Learning Environment Specification (PDF)
This deliverable describes the architecture of the GRAPPLE stand-alone adaptive learning environment, or GALE for short. GALE has an architecture consisting of adaptation, user modeling and domain modeling components that are built around an event bus with which all communication can take place using SOAP messages. The adaptation process consists of a pipeline of “processors” and “modules” that can be easily extended to add new adaptation functionality. Extensive caching is used to ensure adequate performance (short response times). This deliverable also describes how a large part of GALE can be connected to the GRAPPLE infrastructure to enable the non-stand-alone use of GALE’s adaptation, user modeling and domain modeling components.
File D3.3a Design of CAM (PDF)
This deliverable outlines the definition and design of the Conceptual Adaptation Model (CAM) and CAM tool. The CAM tool is a tool for creating CAM instances with the help of the DM tool and CRT tool (see deliverables 3.1a and 3.2a). The objective of the CAM is to be a system-independent high-level model and tool for straightforward, intuitive graphical authoring of Adaptive Hypermedia. In this document, relations with the DM (Domain Model) and CRT (Concept Relationship Type) models and tools are investigated and a design of the CAM model, CAM tool and the shell that links the three tools together is given.
File D2.1 Definition of an appropriate User profile format (PDF)
In this document the Grapple User Profile Format is presented.

The first prototype is accompanied by this report that explains how to use the first prototype where existing LMSs and GALE are integrated.
